After some googling I finally settled on the Les Paul style kit sold by the diy guitar shop
Because they were out of stock I pre-ordered a kit in July and waited patiently. It's now mid august it the kit has arrived...
This particular kit has a 3 piece solid mahogany body, a multi piece carved maple cap, and beautifully figured flame maple veneer top. The woods are all unsealed thus giving us a massive range of finishing options, so with a bit of care we might be able to produce a stunning transburst effect finish.
The neck is mahogany with a rosewood fingerboard, medium gauge brass frets and maple veneer on the blank 'paddle' headstock.
The kit also comes with tune-o-matic bridge and all the electronics/wiring required to get the guitar working. The cheap humbucker pickups will, if the guitar proves to be playable, get upgraded to some nice PAF's.
